Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia (formerly known as Summerbridge) is a six-year academic enrichment program that builds a path from middle school to college for low-income students from Philadelphia and Camden. Breakthrough also inspires talented high school and college students to become educators and engaged citizens by giving them responsibility for teaching in the program. Breakthrough provides rigorous academic enrichment for students from 7th through 12th grades through summer and after-school programs; it also provides high school and college admissions support and counseling. College and high school students from around the country serve as intern teachers in the program. Breakthrough emphasizes academic excellence, family involvement, leadership, teamwork, creativity, and diversity. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Teacher Coach position is designed for professional educators who are looking to gain experience in teacher training and leadership.

Breakthrough is seeking professional Teacher Coaches in Literature and Writing, Math, and Science for its 2012 summer academies. Teacher Coaches work approximately 30-35 hours per week (Monday – Thursday) during the nine-week summer sessions, from June 11 – Friday, August 10. They also attend approximately 16 hours of pre-summer training on weekends and/or in the evenings prior to June 11. They help prepare, train, supervise, and mentor our college-student intern teachers; their work is essential to our students’ and intern teachers’ success. Breakthrough operates programs at three sites: Saint Joseph’s University, Germantown Friends School, and Drexel University.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in 3 Saturday/ Weeknight pre-program trainings on the Breakthrough teaching model
Oversee two subjects (Literature and Writing for Humanities coaches; core subject area plus an elective for Math and Science coaches)
Adapt scope and sequence for given subject based on students pretest data and progress throughout the summer
Observe classes a minimum of twice a week and conference with teachers after observations, providing feedback on teaching methods and classroom management
Work with intern teachers to revise and implement daily lesson plans and ensure that intern teachers adhere to lesson plan deadlines
Train Breakthrough intern teachers to effectively implement Breakthrough lesson plans
Attend the two week intern teacher training (part of the nine-week program commitment). *Accommodations can be made for SDP teachers whose classes will still be in session during the two weeks of training.
Provide teachers with written/verbal feedback on daily lesson plans and accompanying documents
Lead additional training sessions and workshops on identified teaching techniques throughout the summer
Facilitate weekly department meetings
Communicate and work closely with Site Director to ensure progress of students and teachers
Grade student pre-tests and post-tests and/or supervise the grading of those tests; review and edit end-of-summer student evaluations
Write mid- and end-of-summer evaluations of assigned intern teachers
Be available and present during work hours to provide both formal and informal feedback, advice and support to intern teachers
Engage fully in the Breakthrough community, sharing our passion for teaching, learning, and leading
Three years teaching experience
Commitment to and passion for teaching and ongoing professional development
Outstanding knowledge of subject matter and broad knowledge of content-specific and general teaching resources
Flexible approach to pedagogy
Ability to work with students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
Ability to deliver specific, positive, constructive, and honest feedback, both written and verbal
Outstanding presentation, writing, and organizational skills
Creativity, energy and commitment to excellence

SCHEDULE

April/May-Teacher Coach Orientation
Early June – Periodic contact with teachers by email/phone
June 11th* to August 10th- Monday to Thursday, full-time, plus full days on Friday, June 15th, June 22nd, and August 10th

*Breakthrough is willing to make accommodations for full-time teachers who have school responsibilities during the weeks of June 11th and June 18th.

COMPENSATION: $4000-$4500
