Get Healthy Philly Annual Report

Posted by on September 05, 2011

What can we do to help smokers in Philadelphia quit for good? How can we make healthy foods more available and affordable? What can we do to protect Philadelphians from secondhand smoke? How can we make it easier for people to lead physically active lives?

It is these questions and more that we’ve been working steadily to answer over the past year through the Department of Public Health’s Get Healthy Philly initiative.

Get Healthy Philly was made possible by funding from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Philadelphia was one of only four large cities to receive funding for both tobacco control and healthy eating & physical activity promotion.

We invite you to learn about this transformative work through our Annual Reports. As you review them, please take a moment to reflect on the healthier environments that we are working together to create –  environments, for instance, where children can access fresh fruits and vegetables at their local corner stores; where parks and playgrounds are smoke-free; and where healthy marketing messages on radio, TV, and public transit reinforce Philadelphians’ right to be healthy.

These achievements would not have been possible without the visionary leadership of Mayor Michael Nutter and partnerships with community-based organizations, academic institutions, and colleagues in government. Get Healthy Philly brought together Public Health, Transportation and Utilities, City Planning, Parks and Recreation, Public Safety, and Health and Opportunity to make it easier for people to be healthy in their homes, neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces.

We hope you are inspired by what can be accomplished by working together to build a healthy, active, and smoke-free city.
