This in-person event debuts the second edition of an expanded report examining how immigrants shape communities across Pennsylvania. Through new data on entrepreneurship, homeownership, taxes, workforce participation, education and civic life, the report offers the most comprehensive picture yet of immigrants and their impact on the region.

The program will feature a presentation of the report’s findings followed by moderated panel discussion with leaders from across Pennsylvania exploring a central question: What does it mean to be a resident? The conversation will examine how communities create the conditions for people to put down roots and strengthen the places they call home.

But the work isn’t finished. A $3.3 billion adequacy gap remains, and nearly 70% of Pennsylvania’s public-school students are still in districts that don’t have the resources they need.

Join PA Schools Work for a webinar on Wednesday, August 26, 12:00-1:0PM that looks back at what this year’s budget means for our schools and forward at why we can’t let up on adequacy investments. We’ll cover:

  • What’s in the budget — the adequacy supplement, BEF and SEF increases, and what these dollars are already making possible in classrooms: smaller class sizes, stronger math and literacy supports and expanded STEM and career and technical education.
  • Why it matters — the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional, and the state’s ongoing obligation to provide every student a “thorough and efficient” education.

Right now, the teacher shortage crisis in the United States has left roughly 400,000 positions unfilled or staffed by under-certified educators. The ripple effects show up in student achievement, including literacy outcomes, and in school culture, where vacancies and turnover can affect students’ sense of belonging and connection.

Join us at our next Read by 4th Lunch and Learn for a conversation with Scott Gaiber, Deputy Chief of Talent Initiatives at Elevate 215, about the Philadelphia Citywide Talent Coalition’s work to recruit, retain, and develop diverse, effective teachers.

We’ll explore the realities shaping Philadelphia’s teacher workforce, from vacancies and emergency permits to changing enrollment and teacher retention. This series pairs interactive workshops with individualized coaching to help your team develop a customized evaluation plan for your program or project. Participants learn strategies for identifying meaningful outcomes, questions, and evaluation approaches while receiving one-on-one coaching support throughout the series.

When & Where: Sessions will be held virtually via Zoom from 10:00 am –12:00 pm, with optional team or coaching time until 12:30 p.m. Organizations will meet with their coach between sessions.

The conference is open to those working, creating, and developing University-Assisted Community Schools (UACS), including school, union, university, nonprofit, foundation, neighborhood, and government partners. Through interactive panels, facilitated discussions, and breakout sessions, participants will exchange ideas, share promising practices, learn from one another’s experiences, and build connections with colleagues from across the country.

Meals will be provided on Monday and Tuesday. Registration is required, and space is limited.

This bi-annual conference is sponsored by Penn’s Netter Center for Community Partnerships and its University-Assisted Community Schools National Network.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

We invite conference participants to propose and facilitate interactive breakout sessions that foster open dialogue, shared learning, and exchange across a range of UACS topics. Those interested in leading a session may submit a proposal through the designated section of the registration form. Selected sessions will be confirmed in early September.

Expected breakout sessions include: college and career readiness and completion; STEM education; physical and built environment; health and fitness; family and community engagement; democratic implementation research; teacher education and UACS; and more. Breakout session titles and descriptions will be updated on the conference website in early September.
