Youth Organized for Disaster Action (Y.O.D.A.) Spring Showcase

Conference Call Series

Join Y.O.D.A. schools as they share their experiences over the last 3.5 years implementing service-learning projects focused on safety/disaster preparedness topics. Adult and youth presenters will share their program model and best practices for replication elsewhere. Time will be allotted for questions and answers.

Valdosta High School from Valdosta, GA
Valdosta High School will showcase how their Y.O.D.A. – C.P.R. (Children Providing the Resources) service learning programs are bringing awareness to and preparing students, parents, teachers, and the community for the unexpected. We will also discuss how our programs help boost academics, improve attendance, and promote good citizenship skills through linking students’ experiences to the State performance standards, K-12 service learning standards and by providing students with new challenges and new skills.

Gorton High School from Yonkers, NY
Gorton High School will focus on the methodology of annually certifying over 300 individuals in American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, 150 in babysitting safety, and 100 in disaster readiness all using student instructors in partnership with the American Red Cross and the Yonkers Office of Emergency Management. Discussion of other projects including assembling family emergency kits and a pet safety program will occur.

Blythewood High School from Blythewood, SC
Blythewood High School will center their discussion on the Crime Scene Investigation project conducted with health occupation students. Visual aids including video, photo and sound clips will accompany the presentation given by students and teachers involved in the project.

Cullman Center for At-Risk Education “Drop in for Success” Program from Cullman, AL
The Drop in for Success program’s presentation will focus on service-learning as an effective dropout prevention strategy. A program DVD will be shared and questions will be answered.

Calls will be moderated by Joan L. Liptrot, Executive Director of the Institute for Global Education & Service Learning and will last approximately 60 minutes.

Youth Organized for Disaster Action (Y.O.D.A.) is a service-learning program that focuses on helping young people prepare their families, schools and communities for emergencies and disasters.  Supported by a Learn and Serve America grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, Y.O.D.A. began as a project of the Institute for Global Education and Service Learning (IGESL) in collaboration with the New Jersey Commission for National and Community Service and the National Dropout Prevention Center.  Schools participating in the Y.O.D.A. program were located in rural, suburban and urban locations in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.
