Description:
The Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory seeks a Program Director as a managing director and direct service provider for its programs. The Program Director should have a background in carpentry and a desire to learn wooden boat building. S/he should be articulate, patient and able to gain the trust of students who come from very difficult backgrounds and circumstances. The Program Director should be organized and an independent worker. A background in youth development will strengthen a candidate’s application. The Program Director should be ready to share a vision for programming and help advance the mission of the organization through the formulation of program content and curriculum. Sailing experience preferred. Spanish speaking a plus.

Duties Include

DIRECT SERVICE (55%)
• Lead educational programs in boat building with pre-teen and teenage students including the school day Canoe Build and afterschool Boat Build and Sail programs
• Develop curriculum for the programs listed above and any new initiatives as needed
• Work with the Executive Director to assure that all programs are meeting the objectives set forth in contractual agreements with community partners
• Evaluate the effectiveness of programs through the use of pre-and post biometric surveys and individual
student follow up
• Lead field trips, including occasional weekend or overnight excursions
• Participate in the Sea Change Committee, an advisory committee to the board made up of students and
faculty of the Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory
• Recruit new students into the after school programs and manage relationships with new and existing
participating schools for the Canoe Build Program

BOAT BUILDING (35%)
• Keep student projects moving forward to assure all boats are ready to launch at the completion of each
program
• Prepare all materials needed for all student projects
• Order supplies, lumber and tools needed for all student projects
• Manage the shop tools, oversee tool sharpening, and maintain a maintenance schedule for all shop machinery

OTHER (10%)
• Work with the Executive Director to assure that the programs of Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory are
meeting the needs of the students
• Attend professional development trainings
• Manage the organization’s Intern and volunteers in shop projects
• Teach an optional evening or weekend class for adults in the maritime arts
