The Institute for Youth, Education, and Families (YEF Institute) at the National League of Cities is hosting its biennial Your City’s Families Conference from April 28 to May 1, 2004 in Portland, Oregon. The conference helps local officials and other community leaders learn new strategies and develop action plans to support the youth, children, and families in their cities and towns.

The YEF Institute strongly encourages communities to send teams of at least four city officials and other local leaders in order to get the most out of the conference, which operates on a dual track. Participants learn new information and ideas through plenary sessions, panel discussions, and workshops. At the same time, teams have the opportunity to pursue an individualized process of planning and agenda-setting with the assistance of a facilitator.

By working together during the conference, many teams are able to translate the experience into collaborative action when they return home. Individuals who attend the conference on their own are given advice about team-building strategies that may help them forge broader partnerships with key stakeholders in their communities. In both instances, the focus is on practical help for municipal leaders that can yield lasting progress for children and families.
