Working Group on National and Community Service

Posted by on February 24, 2006

Youth Service America (YSA) invites you to participate in the latest gathering of the Working Group on National and Community Service, which provides a cohesive voice for the youth service and learning field, to discuss and develop effective strategies for engaging foster care youth in community service. Foster care youth are a tremendous untapped community resource who are often viewed as a group needing services rather than community assets and resources. What are effective ways to change that paradigm? How are foster care youth already engaged in their communities? What effective/promising resources exist to aid in this effort? What can be done to deepen and strengthen these efforts? Who are the key players to involve in this process? These questions and others will be addressed by a panel of experts including Robin Nixon, Director of the National Foster Care Coalition (<a href="http://www.natl-fostercare.org">http://www.natl-fostercare.org</a>), young people from the foster care system, and a representative from a leading organization engaging foster youth in service. Audience members will be invited to share their own strategies. The results of this meeting will be published in YSA’s periodical, Youth Service Journal (<a href="http://www.ysa.org/program/ys_journal.cfm">http://www.ysa.org/program/ys_journal.cfm</a>). This gathering will be held Monday, March 13, 2006 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in Washington, DC at the Public Welfare Foundation – 1200 U Street, NW.
