CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Women and the *NEW* American Dream
Otterbein University is hosting the Midwest’s first regional summit on March 9 and 10, 2012 for all of us who are determined to work together in our communities to create innovative new strategies for women and girls to flourish. We are issuing an immediate call to action to invite students, scholars, higher education staff, and community partners to join us in Ohio for this important dialogue about:
* AWARENESS: Raise awareness about the institutional and structural obstacles facing women and girls.
* STRATEGIES: Develop new strategies in higher education that support the flourishing of women and girls, including service-learning and community-based research.
* COMMUNITY: Cultivate meaningful and sustainable community partnerships and alliances to create more “communities of opportunity.”
* LEADERSHIP: Train a new generation to become social change agents on their campuses and in their own communities.
* PHILANTHROPY: Unleash resources to transform the everyday experiences of women and girls.
We are pleased to announce that Shirley Sagawa, Visiting Fellow at the Center for American Progress, “founding mother of the modern service movement,” and author of The American Way to Change will be joining us for the plenary session along with other scheduled speakers and guests. Veteran Journalist Chris Jansing (msnbc) will host a Town Hall at the conclusion of the summit to help us shape an agenda for the future.
It is our hope that your institutions will be an integral part of this summit, joining us in conversation at this UN-conference, by facilitating and/or attending workshops, ed-talks, pecha-kucha presentations, a poverty simulation, hunger banquet, world café, and a series of intentional dialogues. If you are interested in attending yourself or sending a team, please visit our website at http://www.otterbein.edu/opportunitynation and click on the “Intent to Participate” button to complete the requested information by February 9, 2012. After we have received your information, one of our summit coordinators will work with your campus or community organization to facilitate participation and registration ($125 non-students, $25 students). Please feel free to contact us at (614) 823-1371 or email us at [email protected] if you would like additional information.
