Winter ’26 Institute on Teaching Social Action – Jan 9-11

Posted by Corella & Bertram F. Bonner Foundation on November 18, 2025

We would like to invite you to apply to the virtual Winter ’26 Institute on Teaching Social Action on January 9-11, 2026 (1-5:30 PM EST). Today, many college courses teach about democracy and change, but few courses provide students the opportunity to learn by doing them. The Winter ’26 Institute meets this need by providing faculty the necessary training to teach social action.

The registration-free Winter ’26 Institute will be led by Scott Myers-Lipton, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at San José State University, who developed a social action course in 2006, and taught it 30 times. Checkout our website to learn more about our social action model, as well as explore the 20+ student-led campaigns happening this fall semester.

Here is what Dr. Cassandra Simon from the Social Work Department at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa had this to say about the Institute:

“The Institute was one of the most effective uses of my time in my 30+ years in higher education. The Institute provided a structure and the tools to implement social action in an organized and meaningful way as a part of the educational experience. I left the Institute invigorated, armed with new knowledge and tools. I wondered where the Social Action Institute had been all of my higher ed life.”

Learn more and apply here.

The application deadline is due on Monday, December 19th. If January 9-11th doesn’t work for you, please consider applying to one of our in-person (DC, Charleston, NYC, & Berlin) or virtual ’26 Institutes.
