White House Unveils New Policies to Transform Child Welfare

The Washington Informer reports that the White House unveiled new policies aimed at preventing family separation and supporting families, particularly those facing economic hardship. A key focus of these policies is distinguishing poverty from neglect and ensuring that financial struggles alone are not cause for removal of a child from their family. States are encouraged to update their definitions of neglect under the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act and to use federal funding more flexibly for prevention services. The administration is also prioritizing kinship care, making it easier for children to live with relatives when they cannot stay with their parents. Additionally, upcoming research initiatives will explore how integrated services can improve outcomes for families and prevent homelessness among youth aging out of foster care.
