Where Does All the Money Go: Shifts in Household Spending Over the Past 30 Years
Low-income households spent less money in 2014 than they did in 1984, while middle- and high-income households increased their budgets, according to a new report from the Hamilton Project. Where Does All the Money Go: Shifts in Household Spending Over the Past 30 Years finds that in the last three decades, low-income households saw their budgets shrink by 4 percent and now spend more money than ever on basic needs such as housing and food. Low- and middle-income families spend much more on housing and health care than they did 30 years ago, accounting for much of the budgeting shift, according to the report.
