What Does the Education Department’s DEI Guidance Really Mean?

Higher ed leaders have been asking the U.S. Department of Education for more detailed guidance ever since the Office for Civil Rights issued a Dear Colleague letter on Feb. 14 calling for the elimination of race-conscious programming and policies. That guidance finally came Friday, February 28, the deadline for colleges to comply with the letter, in the form of a nine-page frequently asked questions document.
Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights, said in a news release that the FAQ would help institutions comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the equal protection clause of the Constitution and the U.S. Supreme Court decision against race-conscious admissions Students for Fair Admissions vs. Harvard.
