KEY PEACE DAY PHILLY 2013 EVENTS TO POST ABOUT

9/17 Peace Teach In at Drexel University, 1:00pm-6:00pm
Drexel University, The James E. Marks Intercultural Center, 33rd St. and Chestnut St.

FREE

This event will include workshops and networking opportunities devoted to peace and non-violent conflict resolution. Concurrent workshops will be provided on the following topics: Non-violent conflict resolution, Peace education, Gender and peacebuilding, International organizations and Mediation. Facilitated by Barbara Simmons, Executive Director of the Peace Center of Langhorne, PA.

9/18: Measuring Social and Economic Factors that Develop a More Peaceful Society, 4-5:30pm

Michelle Breslauer of the Institute for Economics and Peace will talk about the Global Peace Index and other tools used to measure peace. Learn about relationship between peace, business and prosperity, and gain a better understanding of the cultural, economic and political factors that drive peacefulness.

9/19 “Perspectives On Peace” Photo Exhibition Opening Reception, 5-8pm

Drexel University’s Office of International Programs and the Philly Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP Philadelphia), with support from Peace Day Philly, present this special exhibition featuring 5 of Philadelphia’s finest photographic artists. Featuring the work of Laurence Salzmann, Noah Addis, Eric Mencher, Sarah Bones & Anthony Wood.

9/20 Peace Day Philly 2013’s “What Can YOU Do For Peace?” Kick Off Event
This community event at Hawthorne Park, 12th and Catherine, will feature Philadelphia’s Poet Laureate Sonia Sanchez and World Fusion Artist Farah Siraj. Poetry, music, arts activities for kids. In partnership with te Hawthorne Empowerment Coalition and the 3rd Police District.

9/21 “A New Global Future” Peace Conference, 10am – 4pm
This collaborative day of workshops, involving organizations such as the UN Association of Greater Phila. and the Envision Peace Museum, will include skill building related to non-violence, communication skills, voting rights, social media for social change, honoring UN Peacekeepers and more. 9/21: Stories In Service: A Day of Neighborhood Storytelling

12-2pm, 4 locations in the city

Storytellers and youth poets will share tales based in African oral traditions with the goal of bring hope and peace to each community. Each program is representational of a neighborhood village and provides opportunities for community members to interact through call and response, song, movement and rhythmic expression within the context of the storytelling experience. All programs are FREE and FAMILY FRIENDLY!

9/21 Peace Day Unity Walk, 3:30-5:30pm
All are welcome to walk side by side in solidarity for peace and in the spirit of our common humanity. This walk will be approximately 2 miles and will stop at the “American Casualties” street art project related to gun violence. Start point: The “Sister Cities” Park at 18th and the Parkway, end point Rittenhouse Square.
