Child care in the U.S. faces critical access and affordability challenges for families, defined by a 28.2% national supply gap and an average annual cost of about $28,000 for two children. However, the financial burden is heaviest for lower-income households and families of color, where rising costs outpace income growth at a far steeper rate. This Institute for Research on Poverty webinar will feature research across three state-specific studies, examining child care capacity measurement in Virginia, compromises in child care by mothers in Massachusetts, and the impact of child care closures in Wisconsin.
