Webinar: College Access & Success for Undocumented Students – Nov 10
Posted by PHENND on November 1, 2022
Please join PHENND and representatives from TheDream.US (Hyein Lee and Chris Aviles) and their local college partners (Cabrini & Rutgers Universities) to learn about their work with DREAMers (undocumented immigrant youth who came to this country at a young age). TheDream.US is the nation’s largest college and career success program for undocumented immigrant youth, having provided more than 8,750 college scholarships to Dreamers attending over 70 Partner Colleges in 19 states and Washington, DC.
The majority of TheDream.US Scholars currently enrolled in college are undocumented, without DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) or TPS (Temporary Protected Status). TheDream.US provides undocumented immigrant youth, who do not qualify for state or federal financial aid, with scholarships enabling them to attend one of the organization’s Partner Colleges.
In July 2021, a Federal Texas Judge ruled that DACA is unlawful, barring the processing of first-time applications but allowed the program to continue for current recipients. The case was appealed in the Fifth Circuit. In August 2022, the Department of Homeland Security re-issued DACA after following required rule-making process, however new applications continued to be barred. Most recently on October 5, 2022, the Fifth Circuit sent the case back to the Federal Texas Judge for further review but upheld his ruling that DACA is unlawful. The court left DACA in place for its 600,000 current recipients.
Most importantly, 100,000 undocumented HS students are now graduating annually, the majority of whom are not eligible for DACA.
