ASAP announces Word Wizards reading program

If you enjoy working with kids and are interested in sharing your time and passion for reading, the After School Activities Partnership is offering a new after school initiative Word Wizards.

With a commitment of only one hour twice a week volunteers could make all the difference for middle school students in Philadelphia public schools who are falling behind in their literacy skills.

ASAP provides training, support, and a small stipend; volunteers are asked to just bring their enthusiasm for reading and a desire to share that with young people.

Mandatory training will include tips on using newspapers and current events to peak students’ interest in reading, as well as word games for building vocabulary that will create an experience different from the traditional classroom setting, and will help to build on what they are learning during the day.
