volunteers needed, Word Wizards after school program

Help struggling students find the fun in reading with WORD WIZARDS!

If you enjoy working with kids and are interested in sharing your time and passion for reading, consider joining ASAP’s new after school initiative “Word Wizards.” With a commitment of only one hour twice a week you could make all the difference for middle school students in Philadelphia public schools who are falling behind in their literacy skills.

ASAP provides training, support, and a $15/session stipend; just bring your enthusiasm for reading and a desire to share that with young people. Mandatory training will include tips on using newspapers and current events to peak students’ interest in reading, as well as word games for building vocabulary that will create an experience different from the traditional classroom setting, and will help to build on what they are learning during the day.
