W. Phila. group recruiting for new school year
The West Philadelphia Alliance For Children is looking for volunteers for the 2011-12 school year.
WePAC aims to promote childhood literacy through their Open Books, Open Minds program by engaging volunteers in Philadelphia public schools through re-opening and staffing libraries, academic mentoring and after-school enrichment.
Only 20% of Philadelphia’s elementary schools have full-time, staff librarians. Open Books, Open Minds currently provides programming to more than 3,000 elementary students. This year, WePAC is looking to add additional schools and to staff existing libraries for increased hours. Opportunities are available both during school hours and at after-school activities.
