volunteers needed, Read for the Record

Posted by Jumpstart on October 3, 2016

Jumpstart is a national early literacy organization that works toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. Through one-to-one relationships between preschool aged children and college students, Jumpstart inspires children to learn, adults to teach, families to become involved in their child’s education, and communities to progress together. At Temple, we have 80 college students who commit to serving 300 hours in preschool classrooms throughout the North Philadelphia community.

Annually, Jumpstart hosts a national event called Jumpstart’s Read for the Record®. Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® highlights the importance of high-quality early education in America by mobilizing millions of children and adults to celebrate literacy by participating in the largest shared reading experience. In 2015, more than 2.2 million people participated in the campaign. The campaign has gained national exposure in key media outlets including NBC’s TODAY Show, People, The Wall Street Journal, and The Huffington Post. This year on October 27th, people across the country will read The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone-Roach.

In Philadelphia, we are trying to engage as many people in the city to participate in this national event and spread the word about the importance of high-quality early education and literacy. We will be engaging volunteers in a pre-read orientation at Temple University followed by reading and crafts in Jumpstart’s preschool centers. If you would like to participate in the event with us, please follow this link to register: https://goo.gl/forms/MkJ2p9ZMYFojKzZp2. All volunteers must be available from 8:30am-11:30am on Thursday, October 27th.

In addition, if you know classroom teachers who would like to participate – please spread the word! They can receive more information about how they can participate by emailing [email protected].
