volunteers needed, PHS Pop Up Garden

Posted by Pennsylvania Horticultural Society on May 26, 2014

Every year, PHS Pop Up Gardens transform neglected spaces into lush and inviting places for all to enjoy. Combining cutting-edge design, outdoor art, and landscape innovation, the gardens showcase the work that PHS performs in communities all year long. PHS Pop Up Gardens leave a lasting impact by shining a light on vacant spaces with potential for redevelopment, as well as promoting the power of greening to transform cities.

This year, from June 9th through mid-October, we will be transforming the empty lot at 1438-46 South Street, on the west side of the Jamaican Jerk Hut, into an island-themed garden, with daily food offerings, a nighttime beer garden, and ongoing entertainment!

For the past three years, volunteers have been key to making garden visits a friendly, enjoyable and educational experience. We hope you will join us this year in welcoming our guests, helping to maintain the beautiful garden, and sharing the mission of PHS to create a sense of community through horticulture.

Although operational hours of the garden will extend into weekends and nights, we are requesting volunteer support for Mondays through Fridays, 11 AM – 2 PM. This is a great opportunity for people who are interested in an ongoing commitment with PHS, as we highly encourage volunteers to sign up for multiple shifts throughout the summer and fall, in order to gain a complete picture of PHS and the Pop Up Garden. Orientation and training will be provided by a PHS staff member.

Feel free to invite a friend to join you for your shift; the garden is too much fun not to share.

Please call 215-988-8859 or email jwong@pennhort.org to sign up. If you have never volunteered before, we encourage you to begin at the PHS Pop Up Garden. You will be smiling all summer long!
