Kujenga Pamoja Festival
Date: October 4th, 2003
Time: 11am-6pm
Information: On October 4th, 2003 the Village of Arts and Humanities will celebrate its 17th annual Kujenga Pamoja festival, ?That We Remember? This theme which focuses on human loss and remembrance, will be expressed through a multi-faceted performance that honors the memories of lost loved ones, while offering a stark and intimate glimpse into inner city life.
The Performance site will feature a row of six abandoned homes once embodiment of blight and neglect, completely wrapped in white fabric sheets. Video footage of interviews with local community members will be projected upon them, inviting the audience to absorb and understand not only the struggle and adversity that comes with inner city life, but also the resulting strength and triumph. The audience will gather across from this handcrafted movie screen in the Village?s latest park building project ? Memorial Park. This park will consist of a remembrance wall composed of memorial tiles inscribed with the names of the hundreds of North Philadelphia residents who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Youth will call out the names of these courageous soldiers and other friends, family members, and neighbors who have passed away.
As this invocation of names comes to an end the performance will begin, combining Native American dances and African memorial observances with a modern hip-hop style celebration of strength and pride. Kujenga Pamoja 2003 will aim to invoke the spirit of healing through its moving and uncensored account of life in the inner city, as told by its residents. Please mark your calendars and join us in this celebration of remembrance and renewal.
