Urban Bridges is a Philly-area program in search of volunteers who could give just four hours a month to help in their Adult High School Diploma Program. No teaching experience or prep is necessary, other than a brief training session by their partner agency, The Center for Literacy. Volunteers would serve as assessors, grading the work that students complete each month. All grading is done on-site at Urban Bridges in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, working with the students in 15-minute intervals. There is no work to take home. Subjects to be graded include Health and Self Awareness, Cultural Awareness, Consumer Economics, Occupational Knowledge, and Government and Law.
The only requirement for participation is a two-year post high school degree (an associate?s degree or above). Assessments will begin at Urban Bridges in January 2005.
Urban Bridges has a total of 20 clients, and two graduates so far. Most of their clients are working mothers, and all are 21 years or older. Most have overcome tremendous obstacles in their lives, and are struggling to take this next step towards a better life for themselves and for their children. In order to see the rest of the class graduate, Urban Bridges needs your help.
