Philadelphia READS plans 2012 Reading Olympics

If you’ve ever watched Alex Trebek and thought, “Hey, I can do that!” then here is your chance.  Philadelphia READS is seeking volunteers to be moderators or scorekeepers at the Philadelphia Reading Olympics’ competitions in the beginning of May.  This annual event is cosponsored by the School District of Philadelphia, the Free Library, the Archdiocese and the City of Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Reading Olympics engages fourth through eighth graders, from Philadelphia’s public, parochial, charter, and independent schools in a collaborative reading competition. Currently one hundred seventy-one teams of up to 12 students are collectively reading 20 books (15 for middle school students) and practicing working together. The competitions, in May, bring the teams together to answer questions about the books.  The teams are awarded a blue, red or green ribbon by accumulating points for each correct answer given during three rounds of play.  This friendly competition motivates children to read and consequently develops life-long readers as they learn the skills of cooperation and teamwork.

Volunteers ask the questions (don’t worry, the answers are provided) or keep score.  There will be training at the site on the morning of the event.  Refreshments will be served and every volunteer will receive an official 2012 Philadelphia Reading Olympics t-shirt.

The Reading Olympics is not just a fun activity.  Getting children to read independently is one of the best ways to ensure their ability to read well. Statistics show that the quantity of independent reading is directly linked to vocabulary development and proficiency in reading.
