Job Title:  Volunteer Youth ESL Instructor/Tutor
Supervisor: Refugee Education Coordinator

Time Commitment:  For tutoring one person or teaching one class:  3 hours a week, 1 hour prep time and 2 hours tutoring/teaching.  Anticipated minimum is 3 hours per week for 8 weeks.  Hours are flexible and depend on the availability of the learner/class and volunteer.

General Description: The Volunteer Youth ESL Instructor/Tutor will be responsible for implementing ESL learning situations tailored for newly arrived refugee families who have been in the United States for six months or less. The overall goals of these ESL activities are to 1) enhance family social skills, 2) increase English language communication skills, and 3) enhance readiness for employment Activities will be targeted in the Philadelphia areas where refugees reside, particularly northeast Philadelphia.  Sites will generally be at the local libraries.

Summary of Responsibilities
The Volunteer Youth ESL Instructor/Tutor will provide either one-on-one tutoring, or group/class instruction to refugee adult learners in sites accessible to refugees in their own neighborhood.

Specifically, the Instructor/Tutor will:
•    Assess goals for each refugee adult attending ESL and manage instruction to meet these goals.
•    Ensure that instruction is provided at the competency level for refugee.
•    Prepare a syllabus and daily lesson plans for each class, based on student needs.
•    Maintain attendance sheets and report of teaching materials.
•    Conducts all services in a culturally appropriate manner.
•    Adhere to all HIAS PA agency policies.

Qualifications:
•    Completion of TESOL certificate program, or active enrollment in a program
•    PA Criminal Background check and Child Abuse Clearances
•    Cultural sensitivity and openness working with different values and beliefs.
•    Ability to work independently with strong interpersonal skills
•    Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries as required and appropriate.
•    Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision making practices.
•    Ability and willingness to travel to neighborhoods where refugees reside.
•    Strong organizational and time management skills.
