Mural Arts Program sets ‘paint days’ for mural at Children’s Village
A new mural, being painted on a side wall at Children’s Village, 8th and Arch Streets, is being painted by volunteers “off-the-wall” on large pieces of parachute cloth This resilient and super-strong material is painted in a workshop and then affixed to the wall – adhering to the contours and providing a permanent bond.
Painting off-site gives even more opportunity for the community to participate in making a local mural. People of all ages and abilities can join in the process and see it come to life.
MAP has scheduled two upcoming paint days to help make this mural a reality. They are scheduled for Saturday, August 4th, 11am to 2pm at Mural Arts at The Gallery, Level 2, 9th & Market Streets and on Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd, 11am to 2pm, at 125 North 8th Street (at the mural site).
The 3,000 square foot public mural will be painted and installed this summer and will be dedicated in the Fall of 2012. Located on the Archworks Building, How We Fish focuses on a timely subject of significant national relevance: the value and meaning of work for individuals and communities.
The hardworking people of Philadelphia are the inspiration for this project. The artists and community organizers heard countless stories about the meaning and importance of work through a series of Creative Forums to gather inspiration through first-hand conversations with neighborhoods and community members.
