volunteer Medicare counselors and outreach workers needed

Posted by on October 10, 2011

The Center for Advocacy for Rights and Interests of the Elderly (CARIE) is currently seeking volunteers to serve as Medicare counselors and outreach workers. CARIE’s mission is to improve the well being, rights, and autonomy of older persons through advocacy, education, and action.

Medicare Counselor
Medicare counselors will speak with seniors and persons with disabilities at outreach events or via telephone and assist them with online Medicare enrollment.  Available hours are generally Monday-Friday, 9-5, and volunteers are able to set their own hours as desired.  CARIE’s greatest level of need is during the Medicare annual enrollment period (October 15-December 7).  Extensive training and ongoing guidance are provided to volunteers, so no previous knowledge of Medicare or the enrollment process is necessary.  We are most interested in volunteers with good people skills and comfort using computers and the internet.

Outreach Worker
Outreach workers will travel to senior centers, senior housing facilities, and adult day care and other facilities to talk about Medicare and key components, such as the Low-Income Subsidy Program.  Available hours are generally Monday-Friday, 9-5, and volunteers are able to set their own hours as desired.  Presentation training and ongoing guidance are provided to volunteers, so no previous knowledge of Medicare is necessary.  We are most interested in volunteers with good people skills, comfort speaking to audiences, and knowledge of Philadelphia neighborhoods and community hubs that might serve as good outreach event locations.

Previous experience working with seniors is a plus but not required, and dedication to improving the lives of older adults is a must.  For more information, please contact David Rosenberg at 1-800-356-3606.
