WePAC seeks volunteer literacy teachers
Research has shown the importance of building a strong foundation in literacy early in life. In a pilot program to begin in February, WePAC (West Philadelphia Alliance for Children) will be working with the faculty at Heston Elementary School, 1621 N. 54th St., to provide enrichment during the literacy block of Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classrooms.
During the literacy block, students meet for small group instruction in guided reading with the classroom teacher; the remainder of the class is involved in supporting literacy activities, which may include independent work or literacy centers. Young students in particular would benefit from assistance and guidance in these supporting activities from volunteers.
If you have a bachelor’s degree and time to volunteer 1.5-2 hours at least once a week, you can make a difference in a child’s life. For an interview, email [email protected].
