Volunteer for the Youth Commissioner Campaign

Posted by on April 9, 2007

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to you regarding a recent charter amendment that will be voted on in the Mayoral Election for the City of Philadelphia on Tuesday, May 15th. This charter amendment will be regarding the creation of a Youth Council. This Council is open to young people aged 12-23 and will act as a consulting body to the City Council. This council of young Philadelphians would advise the Mayor and City Council on legislation and policies that would affect young people. Each City Council member would select one Youth Commissioner and the Mayor will select four.

In order for the Charter Amendment to pass we are encouraging people to vote YES on creating this Youth Commission. The efforts for this campaign are being sponsored by Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY). For more information please visit us on the web at http://www.pccy.org/youth_commission.htm.

In our efforts to spread the word about the vote I was hoping that you could encourage your students and school administrators to support this legislation. Below I have printed some of the suggestions from PCCY on how to support the campaign. There are also flyers available. If you are interested in obtaining flyers regarding the campaign, please let me know.

Thank you so much for your time and support! We really appreciate your commitment to ensuring that the voices of young people are heard! If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or at 508-212-7769.

Take care,

Katie

How can I be part of the Campaign to Create a Youth Commission for Philadelphia?

1) Download a copy of this brochure and give it to your friends and neighbors and let them know what we are trying to do and get them to join the effort. Download: http://www.pccy.org/PDF/Youth%20Commission%20Brochure.pdf

2) Be sure to VOTE on Primary Day – May 15th – when you vote for the mayoral candidates of your choice and the Philadelphia Youth Commission… VOTE YES!

We need young people and adult allies to help us get the word out to voters in all of Philadelphia’s communities. If you would like to join the Youth Commission Campaign, please contact Bill Madeira at [email protected] or at 215-563-5848 x 14.
