Volunteer ESL Tutor Job Description
Position Summary
Tutors will plan and implement tutoring sessions for beginner and intermediate learners in AFAHO’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. In one-on-one or small group setting, tutors help students improve skills in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English. Learning sessions are student-driven, focusing on the needs and goals of the students. Your duties will range from the preparation of course work, planning of classes, conducting instruction, determining student levels and providing productive feedback.
Responsibilities
• Organizing and delivering classroom lectures to students
• Evaluating a students’ class work and assignments; providing appropriate feedback to students
• Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
• Preparing classroom and coursework materials, homework assignments, activities and handouts
• Give individual attention to the learner’s educational needs
• Classroom management
• Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
• Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs.
• Record and maintain records and provide information about student progress and development
• Meet with supervisor regularly to discuss student needs and progress
• Refer the learner to AFAHO’s staff for needs other than tutoring
• Creating a vibrant teaching and learning atmosphere
• Establish a good rapport with student(s) and other tutors
Qualifications
• ESL Tutor Training preferred
• Fluency in English
• Good communication skills and the ability to explain concepts
• Work well with other tutors and staff
• Patience; the ability to adapt to different learning styles
• Awareness of cultural differences
• Enthusiasm for teaching and learning
• A sense of humor
Time Commitment
Tutors commit on average three to six months of tutoring at AFAHO, averaging at least four hours per week.
