Americorps*VISTA Position Available

Project SHINE (Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders) at Temple University is seeking to hire two people for year long, full-time VISTA positions. Project SHINE is a national service-learning initiative that connects college students with elder immigrants for one-on-one ESL tutoring to help elders develop the language and civic skills necessary for U.S. citizenship. The relationship between student and elder fosters greater cultural and civic awareness across generations. Currently 17 universities and community colleges are part of the national consortium, providing service-learning opportunities to students and elders throughout the country. VISTAs will help to develop greater connections between the partnering institutions, organize outreach to tutors, elders, and community organizations in Philadelphia, and research the needs of elders in Philadelphia and nationally. Bachelor degree required. Bilingual skills, experience in different cultural backgrounds and/or urban communities, and computer skills are preferred. Compensation is $843 a month with health insurance and a $4725 educational scholarship or $1200 stipend upon completion of service.
