Verizon YouthTech Contest

Posted by on January 30, 2004

Hello everyone,
I’m writing to inform you of a contest that United Way is running in conjunction with Verizon and the School District of Philadelphia. The Verizon YouthTech Contest seeks to honor young people with active involvement in using technology or innovative ideas for its use by preparing an essay in accordance with the program’s criteria, in one or more of the following categories:

Web Design – the web site should be designed to connect young people to one another, to information, or to resources and opportunities in new and innovative ways.

Community Service – the project should use technology to make the community a better place to live in and/or help people in need.

Career Explorations – the project should use technology to help young people find work, start small businesses, explore careers or otherwise make progress towards employment.

Prizes include:
First Prize (6 awards): A brand new, state-of-the-art personal computer!
Second Prize (18 awards): A wireless Personal Digital Assistant (PDA – a PDA holds calendar items, contacts, and has a wireless internet connection when in range of a signal)!
Third Prize (30 awards): A refurbished personal computer!

This contest is open to any high school student attending high school in Philadelphia. I strongly encourage you to promote the contest in any environment where you may interact with high school students. This is a perfect opportunity to highlight some of the great work you may already be doing in technology with your youth.

The deadline for submission of contest essays is Monday, March 1, 2004 by 4:00 p.m. The essay should be submitted to:

Benjamin Bruenig, Teaming for Technology
United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania
7 Benjamin Franklin Parkway
Philadelphia, PA 19103

Take care and please contact us with any questions.
