SERVE Philadelphia 2011-2012 VISTA Information and Application

Nutter created the Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service to ensure that his administration was at the forefront of promoting service as a strategy to impact challenges and strengthen communities. Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service is accepting applications for five SERVE Philadelphia 2011-2012 VISTAs to work on a variety of projects across the city designed to increase access to educational opportunities and strengthen community volunteer networks.
NOTE: Four of these positions will be housed in the Mayor’s Office. The fifth VISTA will be hosted by Global Citizen, a close partner of the Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service.
Positions

Schedule
SERVE Philadelphia 2011-2012 VISTAs will serve full time for a period of one year, beginning Friday, August 12, 2011 and ending Friday, August 10, 2012. VISTAs are required to attend a mandatory pre-service orientation in Philadelphia from Monday, August 8th to Thursday, August 11th.
Each of the five VISTA positions outlined on pages three through seven require full time service, with occasional responsibilities in the evening and on weekends.
SERVE Philadelphia VISTAs will participate in local orientation and regularly scheduled professional development sessions throughout the year sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service in collaboration with our network of partners.
Benefits
VISTAs will receive a living allowance of $977/month, before taxes. They will also have the option to enroll in the VISTA Health Benefits Program. Finally, VISTAs who complete their year of service will receive an education award of $5,350. This award, which is subject to taxation, can be applied to any federally backed loan or used to pay tuition in the future. NOTE: Per the policy of the Corporation for National and Community Service, VISTAs cannot engage in additional paid work during their year of service.

NOTE: Once candidates have been accepted, they will need to fill out an on-line application through the Corporation for National and Community Service.
