Urban Voters: Take Your Block to Vote
Posted by on October 22, 2004
Make it a civic challenge to get every single person on your block–and in your neighborhood–to vote. My point below is that if you do that, every politician who represents you will take notice–and you’ll start to get results instead of the familiar runaround that people who don’t vote get when they call their elected officials.
The Urban Voters web site– http://www.urbanvoters.org is tailor made for block captains who want to get their blocks to vote. You can find out what your ward and division is, how many people voted in the last Presidential election in your decision, and what it would take to raise the turnout by 10% over the year 2000 in this election. And for those who go door to door, we offer quick access to phone numbers to elected officials (City Councilpeople, especially) who can get faster action on addressing specific problems than you can when you call a Department. There’s no better time to tackle those nasty block problems that you’ve been trying to get solved than around an election. Suddenly, politicians have a real reason to respond. You might actually vote.
So take your block to vote. Go to the web site for support. Call our office at 215-228-1434 or use the Urban Voters line at 215-248-5673 and we’ll give you a packet of canvassing material that can be of real use.
