Urban Teaching Fellows Program, Deadline Extended

William Penn Charter School and Community Partnership School Urban Teaching Fellows Program seeks applicants to participate in a two-year pilot program that will prepare candidates to teach in urban independent schools. Participants will have the opportunity to work and train in two different independent school settings in Philadelphia: William Penn Charter School, a co-ed, pre-K-12 Quaker School founded by William Penn in 1689, and Community Partnership School, a coed pre-K-5 independent school founded in 2006 to attend to the educational needs of children from an underserved North Central Philadelphia neighborhood characterized by high rates of poverty and low rates of graduation.

This program will follow a cohort model and will provide the teaching fellows with an in-depth experience in traditional classroom training in lower and middle school classrooms, as well as the opportunity to work with diverse student populations. Fellows will be encouraged to move beyond technical application to develop skill in reflection, responsible decision-making, and in acquiring a clear personal philosophy of education.

Interested applicants must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree. A degree in education is not required. We welcome a diverse candidate pool.

Responsibilities of position

  • Approach teaching and learning through a culturally responsive lens
  • Fulfill duties of assistant teacher in a lower school and middle school classroom while working closely with a mentor teacher
  • Actively participate in the school community through student activities
  • Attend weekly professional development sessions on areas of teaching growth

Qualifications/Characteristics of candidates

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience working with children not required, but preferred
  • Collaborates well with colleagues
  • Able to adapt alternative strategies in solving challenges
  • Genuine interest in others’ experiences and perspectives
  • Dedicated to the social justice dimensions of education
  • Willingness to lean into difficult conversations
