Up South: Freedom Summers in Philadelphia

As of late, the airwaves have been full of news of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and Freedom Summer.

La Salle University is pleased to host Joan and Matthew Countryman on Tuesday, September 16th from 7-8:30pm to mark this anniversary on campus.

Joan Countryman, a former leader with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, will speak on the summer of 1964, both in Mississippi as well as in Philadelphia. Matthew Countryman, author of Up South: Civil Rights and Black Power in Philadelphia and Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan, will provide his perspective on the historical impact of that summer on Philadelphia. Both grew up in Germantown, and will also comment on that experience.

Registration is required for the event. To register for the event, please visit http://www.lasalle.edu/freedomsummer.
