Unemployment Organizer, Philadelphia Unemployment Project
Description:
The Philadelphia Unemployment Project is hiring an organizer to work with issues brought on by the current recession. The organizer will work to organize unemployed workers and develop coalitions to work on the issues that are of importance to the jobless.
S/he will be responsible for increasing the numbers of unemployed workers who become members of PUP. S/he will use our phone intakes to contact the unemployed and develop relationships with individuals going through periods of unemployment. S/he will find means of reaching the unemployed through unions, churches, and social service agencies, as well as our phone intakes. The organizer will uncover issues of importance to the unemployed through discussions with them. The organizer will work to develop leadership from the members and educate them on the issues. S/he will develop people who can speak to the news media and key officials on issues of importance.
S/he will develop campaigns on issues such as foreclosure prevention, access to health care, jobs, public benefits or other issues as identified by unemployed members.
The organizer will do research on issues of importance to the unemployed and to the recovery of the economy. S/he will track legislation and help develop strategies to educate the unemployed and coalition partners to make sure that their interests are heard.
The organizer will develop a weekly support group for the unemployed to help with issues that arise from periods of unemployment and build a sense of community. S/he will develop a web site/Facebook page where unemployed workers can interact and be involved in issues. The organizer will provide staff support to coalition efforts that deal with the economy.
Minimum of one year of experience working as a community, labor or political organizer required.
