Town Hall on Disinvestment and Gentrification
Posted by on January 25, 2010
North Philly. Collingswood. Germantown. Darby. Bella Vista. Phoenixville.
What do these communities–and so many more across the Delaware Valley–have in common? Disinvestment. Reinvestment. Gentrification.
It’s happening all over our region. And we need to talk about it. That’s why we’re hosting a town hall meeting for the entire community next month.
At the town hall, there’ll be a panel of local organizers who’ll share their experience designing campaigns to curb disinvestment, promote neighborhood diversity and make sure that no neighbor is left behind.
You’ll also get to work in small groups to develop a list of policy recommendations and ideas.
We need a large and diverse group of people to make this event– and future organizing around this issue–a success. Can you join us?

No neighbor left behind!
A town hall meeting on organizing to prevent gentrification and disinvestment
Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010
Bright Hope Baptist Church
5:30-7:30 PM
1601 North 12th Street (12th and Cecil B. Moore)
Parking lot on site or take the Broad Street Subway to Cecil B. Moore and walk three blocks.
Some city residents have made more money selling their home recently than they could have ever imagined. And new business openings in formerly underserved areas have been impressive. But rising values also mean that some may soon be forced out by increased taxes and property values.
In some of our neighborhoods and suburban towns, the issue is not gentrification, but disinvestment as some businesses and residents move out leaving abandoned houses and vacant land behind.
These problems share common causes. And I am sure that no matter where you live in the Delaware Valley you’ve probably seen the impact too.
That’s why people who care about racial and economic justice have to pay attention to the ways disinvestment and reinvestment leave some of us behind.
Can you join us at the February 2nd town hall to learn how we can all work together to make sure that no neighbor is left behind?

Not only will you get to hear from four great local community organizing groups, but we’ll compile all of the ideas generated at the town hall and publish them on our website. They can then be passed on to local legislative leaders. And also help guide the Bread & Roses Community Grantmaking Committee as it makes decisions about which groups to fund in our next grant cycle.
The town hall is an important chance for you to share your ideas and meet other like-minded progressives. And you can pick up some tips to make your community a better place to live in. If you can join us, click here to sign-up to attend.
Hope to see you on February 2nd!
