The Mayor’s Role in Education. A Philadelphia Mayoral Forum – Apr 11

Posted by Philadelphia Education Fund on March 21, 2023

We invite you to join us on April 11, 2023, 8:00-10:30 AM for A Mayor’s Role in Education: A Philadelphia Mayoral Forum at the Franklin Institute (222 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103). We at the Philadelphia Education Fund are proud to partner with EducationWorks, Campus Philadelphia, Graduate Philadelphia, and Philadelphia College Prep Roundtable for this important discussion. The panel will cover the candidates’ vision and role for education in Philadelphia.

The education of Philadelphia’s students has been a matter of collective and vociferous concern for the better part of 20 years. With the dissolution of the School Reform Commission, the installation of a new School Board, the hiring of a new Superintendent, the Commonwealth Court fair funding decision, the after-effects of COVID-related school closures, the pressures on our talent pipeline and the growth of both supply and demand of charter schools, education remains top of mind for many Philadelphians.

Despite our preference to speak of them as binary choices – District vs. Charter, Soda Tax vs. Pre-K, Appointed vs. Elected School Board – the issues that make up our local education discourse are complex, at times polarizing, and of tremendous importance to the more than 200,000 students attending our schools, and their parents.

This April, we are joined by Philadelphia’s mayoral candidates for a discussion on the Mayor’s role in education. What is their vision of public education? How might they leverage a Mayoral-appointed board to advance K-12 education? What is a City’s role in supporting colleges, universities, and career and technical schools? And, how would they use the role of the City’s chief executive to support the educational needs of Philadelphia’s students – from early to adult learners?

Join us for this important discussion!

Seating is limited. And, registration is required.
