The K-12 Teacher Debt Crisis: Towards Teacher Debt Liberation – Apr 29
Posted by West Chester University on April 18, 2023
It often isn’t talked about, but in the United States and Puerto Rico, there exists a K-12 debt crisis. Millions of teachers are drowning in debt. According to the National Education Association (NEA), nearly half of all educators took out student loans and have close to $60K in student debt. School districts across the country are buried in debt themselves. For instance, in Philadelphia, the District pays nearly $300 million in interest and fees alone in annual debt service! And all across the country, young kids and teenagers that can’t afford lunch are being driven into lunch debt.
During this one-day conference, we’ll learn from teachers, activists, union members, artists and other community members about the K-12 debt crisis. We’ll hear their debt stories, learn how to analyze K-12 debt, and discuss together what all this debt does to K-12 education. But perhaps most importantly, by sharing our stories and knowledge, we’ll learn how to develop and practice different types of debt resistance that ultimately will lead us to debt cancellation.
