The Immigrant Experience: From Federal Policy to Education
One Week Summer Institute
The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human
Development Department of Teacher Preparation and Special Education
June 21-June 25, 2004
9am-5pm
Immigrants are not new to the country. The United States was founded by immigrants and has been enriched by the cultural, linguistic, and social capital that these individuals have brought with them over the course of its history. Recent political, economic and social strife in the US has challenged those serving culturally and linguistically diverse populations to seek greater insight into the new immigrant experience.
This 3-credit course is offered in a one-week, intensive, summer institute. It provides an excellent opportunity for those in education, public policy, business, law and health care professions to develop skills to more effectively work with diverse populations in our communities.
Topics to be covered in this course include, but are not limited to:
* The history of immigration in this country;
* Trends and demographics of immigration before and after 9/11;
* Federal immigration policy and its effect on education, health, business and law;
* Mental health issues related to immigrants and immigration;
* School issues facing the immigrant student and family;
* Advocacy resources and other sources of support for those serving culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
