The Eye of the Hurricane: What Katrina Taught Us About Poverty & Class
Dec 5, 2005
7-9pm
A panel of local leaders and activists will gather at William Penn Charter School on Dec. 5 for a provocative discussion, “The Eye of the Hurricane: What Katrina Taught Us About Poverty and Class.”
U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah, Will Gonzalez, executive director of Ceiba, Joyce Miller, assistant general secretary for justice and human rights for the American Friends Service Committee, and Sister Mary Scullion, founder Project H.O.M.E., will discuss the issues of poverty and class revealed in New Orleans and reflected in our own community.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will include a question and answer session. Call 215-844-3460 ext. 264 to R.S.V.P or email [email protected].
“Katrina helped bring to the forefront what many are afraid to see and talk about,” said Marla Nesbitt-Laws, one of the parents organizing the event. “This the perfect time to begin discussions about poverty and class in our country and in the city of Philadelphia. Otherwise people will forget.”
The discussion is sponsored by Advancing Ideas in Multiculturalism (AIM), a group of Penn Charter parents and reflects its mission to promote awareness and understanding. As part of its goal for the year, the group wants to bring together Penn Charter parents and the community beyond the school to examine a key national issue related to multiculturalism, diversity and living together better.
“The images of Katrina cannot be answered by donations of food and money for a nanosecond,” said Marjorie Dugan, AIM co-chair along with Nesbitt-Laws. “They require us to look honestly and deeply into the issues that force people to live in abject poverty in this land of wealth.” The panel discussion begins at 7 p.m. in the Meeting Room in the main building.
