Black social workers schedule conference on black families
The Philadelphia Alliance of Black Social Workers was developed out of concern that services provided to black families were oriented in a way that negated the strengths and resiliency that existed. In concert with that concern, ABSW hosted the first conference of the National Association of Black Social Workers. The conference theme was simply The Black Family in 1969.
This local conference of 2011 will revisit that theme as we explore the ways in which social service providers can draw upon those positive factors while addressing issues and problems that confront black families on a daily basis. One goal of the conference will be for participants to leave with ready-to-apply strategies and interventions that respect a legacy of strength and result in empowerment of those served.
The conference, held Friday, March 25, will begin at 8am at Sharon Baptist Church on Cheltenham Avenue and Vernon Road in Philadelphia.
