Women Against Abuse, Inc (WAA) is currently recruiting for a Telephone Counselor

WAA is the leading and largest provider of services to victims of domestic violence in both the City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The mission of WAA is to provide is quality, compassionate and nonjudgmental services in a manner that fosters self-respect and independence in persons experiencing intimate partner violence and to lead the struggle to end domestic violence through advocacy and community education. With a little under 100 staff, WAA serves over 12,000 individuals each year through emergency residential services (100 bed shelter and 12 transitional housing apartments), legal services, hotline counseling, aftercare services, community education/ training, and advocacy.

Telephone Counselor

Summary of Principle Duties:

The Telephone Counselor performs preliminary legal screening, provide legal options counseling, provide emergency counseling, triages callers and act as a liaison to our Staff Attorneys. All services provided are to victims of domestic violence. Responsibilities include: conducting telephone screenings, gathering information to assist the provision services; determining appropriate resources and advises callers about next steps; and may triage the caller to other appropriate agencies or support services. Provides follow-up assistance to caller as needed and/or engages other staff to conduct necessary follow-up.

Qualifications:

An Associate’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Some experience working with women is required; experience with victims of domestic violence is preferred.
Previous experience in crisis counseling experience is preferred.
Demonstrated effectiveness in crisis intervention is required.
Completion of the 45-hour Domestic Training Class is required.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population is required.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member is required.
Demonstrated commitment to service of others is required.
Demonstrated proficiency in communication, both verbal and written, is required.
Bilingualism, Spanish/English is strongly preferred.
Completion of the 40-hour Domestic Training Class is required (pre or post hire)
Pass criminal record, FBI and child abuse clearances

Hours: 40 hours per week with core hours from 9 am to 5pm weekdays (specific schedule TBD).
