Teacher Workshops
Posted by on February 24, 2006
Please join us on Thursday March 16th, 4-6, at Church of the Advocate, for either of the following teacher workshops:
(A) Free!: Great Escapes from Slavery on the Underground Railroad
Learn how to use improvisation techniques to teach Lorene Cary’s newest book ? a set of slave escape stories, adapted from William Still’s Underground Railroad for middle-school age youth.
(B) Coming Home
Using the craft of memoir-writing and the content of Asian Arts Initiative’s Chinatown Live(s): Oral Histories from Philadelphia’s Chinatown, learn to explore issues of community, home and cultural identity.
Teacher workshops will be followed by a dinner, featuring a performance by Art Sanctuary’s North Stars a unique after school arts program that uses social history as a text to provide content for the expressive arts, which also teach
activism, self-worth, and literacy. This year, the North Stars are using Free! as the text around which they are building their performance.
If you would like to get Act 48 credit, please register using the School District of Philadelphia’s online registration system — http://www.philsch.k12.pa.us/offices/act48/
For more information about the workshops and their facilitators, please contact Nicole Meyenberg at 215-204-7347 or nicolem@temple.edu.
