One in five residents in Philadelphia speaks a language other than English at home. Youth learning English as a second language often face challenges at school, and need extra tutoring and academic support to stay on track. Many of these young people are the unfortunate victims of bullying by other students, and even cultural misunderstandings by well-meaning adults. After school is a safe space where English language learners can receive the additional supports and confidence they need to succeed in school and beyond. This session will cover tools and strategies for out-of-school educators with English Language Learners in their programs. After going over the basics of how bilingual youth learn, we will discuss specific activities all staff can use to help these youth, and tips for building an environment inclusive of all cultures. Participants should come prepared to interact and network with colleagues. Whether you work with youth in school, after school or other community-based setting, this session is for you.
