Summer Teachers, Steppingstone Scholars Program

Posted by on April 21, 2014

Steppingstone Scholars, Inc. is a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to providing opportunities for motivated and talented Philadelphia schoolchildren. The Steppingstone Scholars Program identifies fourth-graders from Philadelphia public schools and prepares them to enter and succeed in the area’s top college-preparatory schools. Once accepted, Scholars participate in an intensive 14-month-long academic program and are then placed in schools. From there, Scholars have access to support services through middle school, high school, and into college, to ensure successful college completion and career readiness.

The Scholars Program seeks qualified middle/upper schoolteachers to join the Steppingstone faculty for the 2014 Step It Up! Program, beginning on Friday, June 27 and concluding Friday, August 1.  The Step it Up! Program is designed for Steppingstone Scholars between grades 7 and 10. The curriculum includes the core subjects Math, English, Lab Science Skills, and History/ Research Foundations. Students also take part in other courses like Life Skills, College and Career Prep as well as several electives.

We have openings for an experienced Math/Science teacher for high school math and middle school science.

Dual certification preferred; assistance in middle school science available for an experienced Math teacher

Teachers of core subjects will be responsible for teaching approximately four sections of 15-20 students. Each class meets a maximum of five times per week, for a total of 20 classes per week. Teachers are responsible for the curriculum development across grades, based on general guidelines given, and the facilitation of classes. Teachers are also expected to attend weekly faculty meetings and complete periodic written evaluations/assessments of Scholars. The school day runs from 9:00-3:00 pm on MWF and 9:00-4:00pm on Tu/Th.

Candidates must have experience teaching middle/high school students, a strong background in their subject area(s), and an interest in working with diverse populations. Independent school teaching experience is useful, but not required.

Summer Session salaries are $3400.
