Summer Institute on Community-Based Participatory Research
June 26-29, 2007
Hilton Hotel Jackson
Jackson, Mississippi
The Tougaloo College Center for Civic Engagement & Social Responsibility is hosting this summer institute on community-based participatory research (CBPR). As a component of a multi-year collaborative initiative, this summer institute will promote the development of CBPR where the community and academic institutions will become partners in defining issues for research, strategies for carrying out CBPR, and methods of assessment.
The summer institute is designed as a team-based learning experience. Applicants should propose a team comprised of at least four people including faculty, staff, and representatives from community- and faith-based groups who are interested in enhancing the skills needed to facilitate CBPR projects. Teams with fewer members will also be considered. Teams should come to the summer institute with specific projects in mind and be prepared to work with summer institute coordinators in developing research strategies and methods of assessment and evaluation. Interaction among diverse teams will provide an avenue for peer evaluation of best practices, from both academic and community perspectives.
The summer institute will focus in these areas:
*Creating Authentic Community-Campus Partnerships
*Connecting Service Learning with Research to Respond to Community Needs
*CBPR Assessment Strategies
*Accessing Resources to Support CBPR Partnerships
The co-sponsors for the 2007 summer institute include:
