Creative Assets Is The Theme for Summer Institute in Arts Management 2005

The Arts Extension Service at the University of Massachusetts announces its annual three-day summer institute: ?Creative Assets,? on June 20-22, 2005 presented this year in partnership with the Center for Creative Community Development (C3D) and MASS MoCA. Tuesday, June 21st participants will take a one-day field trip to North Adams, MA whereto study the impact of institutions such as MASS MoCA on economic and community health in the region.

The 2005 Summer Institute in Arts Management features three tracks:

Fundamentals of Arts Management focuses on the basics of managing a non-profit organization, with examples drawn from arts organizations.

The Creative Community will investigate the nature of community health, and analyze the role that arts organizations can play in strengthening a community?s health. Tom Wolff, PhD, an internationally acclaimed expert on community strengthening, will be featured, as will Tom Borrup of Minneapolis.

It’s About People offers an arts-based experiential opportunity to explore intercultural communication, human relations management and personal time management.

In addition to Tom Wolff and C3D leaders Stephen Sheppard, Blair Benjamin, and Kay Oehler, faculty includes Robbie McCauley, performance artist on the faculty of Emerson University, Dora Arreola, resident dance artist at New World Theatre, Andrea Assaf, Director of New World Theatre, and Richard Ford of the University of Massachusetts/Workplace Learning and Development, Maren Brown of the UMASS Fine Arts Center, Katherine Myers of MASS MoCA and Susan Sauve, formerly of Jacob?s Pillow along with Arts Extension Service board members: Dr. Craig Dreeszen, Barbara Schaffer-Bacon and Tom Wiedemann.

A featured evening event is the annual Robert Gard lecture, this year offered by Gard?s daughter, Maryo Gard Ewell. The title of her talk is ?Altering the Face and the Heart of America.? The Gard lecture is free and open to the public. Participants may sign up for a single track, or may mix-and-match sessions from the various tracks according to their interests and needs. Single day registrations and scholarships are available.
