Temple to host summit on homeless children
The Children’s Work Group and Temple University School of Social Work will host Students Without A Home, a summit dedicated to learning more about identifying and serving students who do not have a home.
The goals of the summit are to increase in the ability of community organizations to identify homeless students, to understand their rights, and how to access Title One and Homeless Children’s Initiative services; consider potential next steps to provide needed support, and increase the number of homeless students who are doubled up to be provided supports by the School District.
Who should attend: staff from agencies who work with at-risk youth, including community and faith-based groups, after-school programs, and child welfare agencies.
More than 5,000 students are homeless annually in Philadelphia. Many of them are provided supports that help them stay in school and achieve academically. But thousands more students are homeless and do not receive the supports that are available to them. This summit will identify action steps to increase opportunities for these youth to improve their learning and keep them on the path of achievement.
The event will take place on Friday, October 12th from 12:45 to 4pm at Temple University, Kiva Auditorium/Ritter Hall Annex, 1301 Cecil B. Moore Ave, 1st floor in Philadelphia.
To register, send name, organization and email address to Joe Willard at People’s Emergency Center at jwillard@pec-cares.org or call 215-382-7522 x264.
The event precedes the 2nd Annual Homeless Children’s Awareness Week, which takes place October 14th to 20th. This statewide initiative is being organized by the Homeless Children’s Education Fund that strives to provide advocacy, community engagement, and direct service programs that support the education of children and youth experiencing homelessness in Pennsylvania.
The hope for HCAW is to alert families of their rights through the McKinney- Vento Homeless Assistance Act while also encouraging others to get involved in the effort to make a difference in the lives and education of children and youth experiencing homelessness.
