Stockton College seeks ‘Activist in Residence’

ABOUT THE AIR PROGRAM
The Activist in Residence (AIR) program brings a community activist to campus to work directly with the Stockton community. During the year-long position, the AIR will provide the Stockton community with information and insight on particular local issues and how they might be addressed. The AIR will be expected to work with campus organizations and college initiatives appropriate to the AIR’s expertise. A stipend of $10,000 for the academic year is offered as compensation for the AIR’s time commitment and expertise.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The AIR will work with the Center for Community Engagement, the Office of Service-Learning and the School of General Studies in designing and implementing community engagement training and projects. Campus activities may include the following:

Outreach
•    Build connections on/off campus:
o    Communicate with internal and external partners via phone calls, emails, website, social media
o    Attend community meetings
o    Flier/poster creation and distribution
o    Attend campus community engagement events
o    Act as a community liaison to related student clubs/organizations
Event Planning
•    Plan events as appropriate to AIR’s expertise:
o    Coordinate and run on-campus workshops periodically during the school year
o    Host, when appropriate to AIR expertise, in-class presentations and/or presentations at faculty meetings
Expectations
•    Devote an average of 15 hours per week throughout the academic year to on-campus engagement, which may include some evening and weekend events.
•    Attend planning and strategy meetings with the Center for Community Engagement, Political Engagement Project, and the Office of Service-Learning.
•    Demonstrate a professional manner in all communications both internally and externally, whether in person or via electronic means.
•    Set goals for developing student interest in an area of civic engagement, develop and implement a successful strategy that results in a nucleus group capable of sustaining ongoing student activism.
•    Demonstrate community organizing values and practices to students and incorporate them into program efforts/campaigns.
•    Conduct program evaluation/assessment.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate for this position is an established local community activist who is a self-motivated team-player, is outgoing and positive, has excellent communications and coordination skills and works well independently. The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to get along with a wide range of people; cultural sensitivity a must. The candidate must be available 15 hours per week during the regular semester and should have a hunger to learn about the needs and issues of our community in addition to assisting in creating possible solutions.
